Pontarius strengthens Gislaved’s work on civil defence shelters

Gislaved Municipality is now strengthening its work on its existing civil defence shelters. Pontarius – the civil engineering consultancy that integrates business development, law, finance, environment, management and technology – has been awarded the municipality’s framework agreement for a qualified civil defence shelter specialist and will contribute specialist technical expertise to the ongoing work.

Gislaved Municipality has carried out a review of its 20 existing civil defence shelters to identify the measures required to ensure that they are fully functional. Through the new framework agreement, Pontarius will support the municipality in maintaining and managing the shelters so that their protective function is preserved over time.

“In my experience of working with civil defence shelters, many are in better condition than one might think, but there are also recurring deficiencies. The most common issue is that equipment is missing or has deteriorated due to age and moisture. We also see openings and installations that have been made without sufficient consideration for the fact that walls and floor slabs form part of the shelter,” says Mikael Nimmersjö, civil defence shelter specialist at Pontarius.

Under the framework agreement, Pontarius will provide technical and strategic support for the municipality’s ongoing work with civil defence shelters. This may include reviewing and quality-assuring technical solutions, participating in inspections and self-inspections, supporting documentation work, and ensuring that measures carried out in the properties do not impair the shelters’ protective function.

“The advantage of a framework agreement is that we can work more strategically and over the long term together with the municipality. This creates better conditions both for addressing the deficiencies that are identified and for building knowledge for the continued management of the civil defence shelters,” says Mikael Nimmersjö.
